District Profile
Gopalganj district is situated in the north-western part of the state of Bihar. The district is bordered by East Champaran in the east, Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh in the west, West Champaran in the north, and Siwan district in the south. Until 1875, it was only a small village, and in the same year, it was made a subdivision of the old Saran district. The district covers a geographical area of 2019 square kilometers. On 02 October 1973, it became an independent district. The district headquarters is located in Gopalganj town. Gopalganj district is situated in the north-western corner of Bihar state. Geographically, it lies between 83.54°–85.56° east longitude and 26.12°–26.39° north latitude. It is bounded by Champaran district and the Gandak River in the east, Siwan district in the south, and Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh in the north-west. According to the Census 2011, Gopalganj district has 413,044 households with a total population of 2,562,012, comprising 1,267,666 males and 1,294,346 females. The population of children in the 0–6 age group is 449,530, which constitutes 17.55% of the total population. The sex ratio of Gopalganj district is approximately 1021, compared to the Bihar state average of 918. The literacy rate of the district is 53.98%, with male literacy at 62.63% and female literacy at 45.51%.
